Cosmo Spada immigrates from Italy to the United States through Ellis Island, joined a logging crew in the Seattle, Washington area, and then began farming in the greater Portland, Oregon area.
Brothers Arthur and Richard C. Spada form a partnership to combine their separate farming operations to form A & R Spada Farms.
Farming operations move to St. Paul, Oregon, when the Portland Airport and other industrial development expand to include the family’s farm in Portland.
The farm has grown to employ more than 100 full-time employees and an additional 30 to 50 seasonal employees. The farm cultivates more than 2,000 acres in and around St. Paul in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. That land is used to raise a variety of crops, including landscape-type plants that are now shipped to 42 States and 6 Canadian Provinces. Seed, grain, and hazelnut crops are sold on the world markets.
